2008 Public Hearings

The Statewide Independent Living Council of Kansas (SILCK) and the Kansas Association of Centers for Independent Living (KACIL) with be hosting three public meetings to gather input for shaping the 2009 legislative agenda.

It is our great honor to represent the strong grassroots network of independent living advocates we have in Kansas.  Gathering information from you all is vital in developing our legislative message and platform for the upcoming session.

In previous years we have heard from individuals on the importance of access to assistive technology, the need to maintain health care coverage while working and most recently the need for an increase to Protected Income Level.

We would also like to discuss initiatives to improve employment outcomes for Kansans with disabilities.  Recognizing some barriers remain facing Kansans with disabilities related to employment, we are seeking your assistance in removing these barriers.

The objectives for the public meetings is two-fold:

v     Provide information to Independent Living Advocates that they can use when meeting and talking with your legislators and public officials

v     Gather information on the current issues and barriers people with disabilities and Kansas seniors continue to face when while living independently and productively in Kansas.

The meetings are scheduled for:

v     Kansas City, KS., August 11, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Kansas City, KS Public Library, 1737 N. 82nd Street, KC, KS 66112

v     Manhattan, August 18, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Manhattan Fire Station, Assembly Rm. 2000 Dennis

v     Hutchison, August 25, 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., Hutchison Public Library, 901 N. Main

We are only able to hold three hearing across the state, but encourage advocates to attend the hearing closest to you.  If you are unable to attend the hearings, please contact SILCK or KACIL with comments by August 30, 2008

Should you need any type of accommodation, please call the SILCK office at least five working days prior to the meeting at 1-800-217-4525
