Goal 6

Support coalition building with other organizations to advocate essential services for independent living.

Timeline
Ongoing
2005 - 2007

Pursuant to Section 704 (I-k) of the Act; CFR 364.26 and .27, the SILCK will take steps that maximize the communication, cooperation, coordination and working relationships among disability populations, other public and private entities, including Indian Tribal Councils and other advocates working towards systems change.

In response to the devastating budget cuts of 2002, the SILCK in conjunction with other agencies organized and recruited members for the Big Tent Coalition (BTC). This Coalitions  primary purpose is to stand together while advocating for Kansas citizens requiring essential services to live independently.

The uniqueness of coalition building efforts is to focus on the dignity, self-worth and choice of ALL people. Due to the unity of coalitions, we are able to connect with the mainstream of society, not just people with disabilities, to represent equal justice for ALL in their rights and opportunities. By linking arms with a diverse coalition, we are better able to communicate our message of independent living and the right to choose.  We include such organizations as the KS. Hospital Association, the Kansas Medical Society, the state federation of AFL-CIO, the United Methodist Church of Kansas and most of the local and state organizations providing services to the disabled and frail elderly.

We have come a long way on our mission to achieve fairness and equality for the people we represent. The SILCK will continue to reach out to all who affirm our values and continue to build coalitions throughout the state.
